The Quik Pro at Snapper Rocks has not been impressive, to say the least. After a depressing start, organizers looked at the dismal forecast and decided to wait ten days before running the contest again. They extended the waiting period by a few days, hoping that maybe, just maybe, the waves would make an appearance on one of Australia’s most fabled banks. They did not. And the organizers, faced with a tough decision–or really, no decision at all–were forced to run the event before the amount of daylight hours left in the waiting period were less than the amount of hours necessary to complete the event.
Everyone hated it. The competitors hated it. The viewers hated it. Gabriel hated Micro, Freddy P hated his board and the rocks, and Pete Mel hated when Medina dropped an f-bomb on a live webcast. That’s the stuff the viewers love, though. If the waves aren’t going to play, let’s have some drama. Let’s have rivalries! If the World Surf League is going to take an NFL format to surfing, why not go all the way and make it like the WWF?
And here’s hoping that when the contest runs again, it’s not completely terrible.
