One of the most difficult fundamentals of surfing for beginners is the pop up. Practicing on solid land is easy, but trying to stand up out in the water is a different story. Anthony Sasso from Fit2Shred walks us through several different training exercises that will improve your pop up technique, which, in turn, will maximize your time riding waves. For many, utilizing the knees provides an extra level of balance and comfort in getting to their feet. Others simply skip using their knees and jump straight to their feet. There is really no right and wrong way of standing up, but choosing which technique to apply depends largely on your skill level.

Anthony employs great practical drills by adding the use of a foam roller and a bosu ball to his exercise. What these pieces of equipment do is they emulate the instability that surfers will experience while attempting to stand up. When done properly and continually, these exercises will undoubtedly improve your balance and speed while performing the pop up out in the water.
