The Inertia

The ’90s was a different time. A good time for some things, like Nickelodeon and Rollerblades, but a decidedly bad thing for far more important things, like women’s role in surfing. In 1990, Pam Burridge was the world champion. She’s a pioneer of surfing and she was on the front lines of the fight for equality. In the World Surf League‘s most recent installment of The Lineup, Burridge chats openly about the upcoming film, Girls Can’t Surf, which focuses on a trailblazing group of female pros in the 1980s. She also opens up about the intense struggle she faced, what it was like becoming a pro at 15, and the fact that she very nearly won a world title in her very first year on tour.

Girls Can’t Surf will be in theaters around Australia on March 11 and New Zealand from April 8. See more from the World Surf League here.
