The Inertia

Oscar Langburne seems to have a bit of flair in everything he does. The surf world has beaten the drum on his unique style in the water, but the more we all get to know the young surfer the more it’s apparent style and creativity are a part of all things Oscar.

In 2020, music sparked Langburne’s drive to help others, launching a fundraising campaign to support groups in Australia and the States helping underserved youth.  In his latest surf-related endeavor, music is a creative tool for some storytelling in a feature-length surf flick. Glósóli is a 30-minute film broken up into several different sessions, music providing a new vibe for each. And in between each, Oscar shares some thoughts and ideas about inspiration from people like Tom Carroll, surfing, music, and more.

“When a song comes on I remember, it gives you a nostalgic memory I suppose,” he told me. “It’s like a board too. When you go and look at a board and a surf (with that board) comes to your mind.”

In typical fashion, a variety of surfboard shapes, as well as a variety of waves, are featured. Oscar says he’d planned for the film to be something different from the final product. But he went with his creative instincts and instead came away with a collection of short stories, more or less, including highlights from time spent with Carroll.

“He’s evolved so much,” Oscar says of Carroll. “And he’s an absolutely amazing person now. He’s been part of my career, I suppose. He was sort of the first pro I went surfing with, so it was pretty cool to have a few waves.”

Glósóli is “definitely not an amp-up surf flick,” he admits. It is, however, a great spotlight on some inspired surfing and another chance to get to know one of surfing’s brightest and more creative young talents.
