The Inertia

Sharks are in the ocean. This much you know. Depending on where you surf, it’s not uncommon for them to be somewhere around, but it’s likely that you won’t even know it. Shark attacks, although exceedingly rare, are terrifying, so it’s understandable why people are so frightened of them. Carlos Gauna, a man who spends much of his time looking for sharks in the waters off the coast of Southern California, recently ran into Orlando Bloom (of Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean fame) on the beach.

Bloom asked Gauna if there were sharks in the water, and Gauna explained that it was likely. He went on to tell the actor that if there was one nearby, he’d fly his drone down to it. And lo and behold, it only took a few minutes. “Bloom gets a very nice view of a calm, juvenile white shark. For reference, his board is 10 feet long. He approaches it slowly and takes a look. The shark, in textbook style, just eases away. Or does it?”

Sharks like to inspect things from behind. And, in more textbook style, the shark slips easily behind Bloom’s board — something that probably happens every day along the coastline.
