A larger than forecasted swell brought huge waves to Orange County, California, giving surfers something to get excited about. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen waves of consequence in Southern California, and on Friday, August 9, we finally got to witness some again.
This swell originated from Fabio. No, not this Fabio. Tropical Storm Fabio. Some of our best swells in Southern California in the summertime originate from these hurricane swells. This one was bigger and better than forecasted. We had some huge waves, insane barrels, gnarly closeouts, and some crazy wipeouts.
When you get a swell like this, obviously you’re going to get a lot of people showing up just to watch it. So the crowd was thick both on the sand, and in the water. There were a lot of guys waiting for a good, clean swell to come. They finally got it and crowds in the lineup were proof.
But when you have surfers like Nate Yeomons, Kei Kobayashi, Caity Simmers, and countless others out there, you’re guaranteed to get some great rides. Enjoy the show.
