It’s official. Jaws is open for the 2021-2022 big-wave season. And while it may not have been Super-Swell Saturday-like conditions, it looked good out there. Maui islanders Kai Lenny, Albee Layer, Billy Kemper and Annie Reickert were out this week and paddled into some beautiful-looking bombs. Slater Neborsky of 7nine6 Media was there to capture the action.
Billy probably had the wave of the day with a deep barrel as seen in the video above, showing that the King of Jaws still has it after his injury in 2020 and miraculous recovery since. It’s nice to see Mr. Kemper back in fine form.
While her name isn’t of the household variety, it may very well soon be: Annie Reickert is another young, all-around surfer to keep an eye on. She’s close friends with the Lenny family and can often be seen wing foiling with Ridge, Kai’s younger brother. It feels like Annie is primed for a big winter. Something tells me we’re going to be seeing a lot of the youngster as the season continues to unfold.
