A number of years ago I would meet up with Mike and Luke in various remote parts of the country to spend a week surfing, camping in the dirt and telling stories. Then, we’d part ways with plans to meet for the next swell or favorable wind pattern. Having been away from that lifestyle for some time now, I was itching to get back into it and to find out what’s behind this search and exploration obsession as we enter our 30s.
We were away for a week. We drove more than 6,000 kilometers, found some super fun waves, and explored places we had previously researched on the map but had never been. We left knowing that December wasn’t the best time for waves out there, but we were hoping the swell and wind would align to make the effort worthwhile. “West Away” is about the passion behind the endless number of kilometers leading to places to explore, which I hope will resound with people who either live that lifestyle or like me can relate to the effort we spent just to get a few waves.
