The Inertia

Northern Sumatra is one of the last bastions for empty waves. There are waves peeling off points and over reefs that go unseen and un-ridden – and Aura Surf Resort knows how to get you there.

Sitting right on the edge of 4,500 square kilometers of rugged Sumatran wilderness sits the Aura Surf Resort. Fronted by one of the best waves on the planet and backed by jagged mountains, the coastline stretches away from the resort with a nearly endless expanse of waves on tap for every swell, tide, and wind direction.

The resort itself is pretty much a paradise  – a big part of the problem with surf travel to remote locations is finding a place to stay. Sure, you could trek through the jungle contracting dengue fever and various forms of tropical disease, and then live in a tent like a feral cat, subsisting on a diet of grubs and tree bark, but at some point, you’re going to want clean sheets, good food, and a shower.

The Aura Surf Resort has all those things, and much more. It has all the comforts of home, with one major difference: your neighborhood is host to some of the most incredible waves anywhere in the world. They’ve got a speed boat and a zodiac to get you right where you need to be, right when you need to be there.

The photos above are some of Aura’s September highlights, but don’t let that fool you into thinking this place only goes off for a few months a year. The conditions shown here are pretty much the norm all year around, thanks to a hidden trench that ramps up swell events to world-class levels and the longest fetch in the entire Sumatran archipelago. A few WaterWays Surf Adventure passengers scored some of the best waves of their lives, and you could too.
