Last week, a surfer tragically passed away in Kure Beach, North Carolina. According to a news release from the Kure Beach Police department, the man was identified as 39-year-old Bryan Richard Yurecka, of Wilmington, North Carolina.

Carolina Beach residents Glenn Carr and Wendy Harris told WWAY they first encountered Yurecka around 5:00 p.m. on August 23, as they were walking along the beach. The pair saw a woman and child asking what appeared to be a tired surfer if he was okay.

“So she went away and the closer we got to him as we were walking, we realized he was not okay,” said Harris. “We could see that he was bleeding a lot, and so we figured out that it was on his leg — not exactly where — but we tried to make sure that we went high enough, and we knew enough to do a tourniquet. We tried to do it with my shirt, that didn’t work, because it wasn’t long enough, and so then we used the rope from the surfboard.”

First responders soon arrived and began providing life-saving measures, but Yurecka ultimately died of his injuries. The Kure Beach Police Department and N.C. Medical Examiner’s Office have since confirmed that injuries were sustained as the result of a surfing accident, as the Wilmington Star reports.

“The Kure Beach Police Department wishes to express condolences to the family of the deceased,” read the release.
