The 28-year-old surfer and creative, Noa Deane, has a seemingly endless supply of content up his sleeve. His features in surf films feel endless: sharing screen time with Craig Anderson and Chippa Wilson in HEAD NOIZ, surfing with Taj Burrow in the exotic and cinematic Strange Rumblings in Shangri-La, starring in iconic director Kai Neville’s film Cluster. And then there’s NOZ VID. It has reef breaks, beach breaks, slabs, and barrels. It has airs – lots of them. It cost $100k to produce, and somehow director Mikey Mallalieu managed to make it live up to its budget. Maybe even surpassed the expectations of its budget. Oh, and it was made during the COVID lockdown. Could anyone ask for more?
Apparently, yes, because Deane delivered… again. In May, opening with an aggressive, fast, Thurston Moore rock song and a beautifully color-graded punt (and bail), Noa and Mikey gave us NOZ VID – MEAT CUTS VOLUME 001. It’s short, coming in at under 5 minutes, but the volume number implies that not only is there this compilation of crazy waves but there’s probably more on the way.
Releasing B-roll is a risky choice for any self-respecting filmmaker. Do it right, and you’ve warmed seasoned travel vets and little grommets hearts: their favorite freesurfer eats it sometimes! Their favorite freesurfer doesn’t make every doggy door! Their favorite freesurfer is… a real person! Do it wrong, and you’ve infantilized a larger-than-life movie character, bringing a godly surfer back down to annoying egotistical guy in the lineup levels.
But, fear not, Meat Cuts is prepared to perfection: done well (but still raw enough to provide a little shock value), marinated with cinematic flair, and seasoned with a little bit of artistic creativity. But still short and sweet and full of classic Noa Deane-style surfing, which is reliably entertaining.
