Lorcan Finnegan and Nicholas Cage on set of The Surfer.

The Inertia

It seems like it’s been ages since we first caught wind that Nicolas Cage was going to play a surfer in theaters. Since then, we’ve seen him fighting in the shallows, struggling with actually surfing, and receiving a six-minute standing ovation at Cannes. Now, we finally get a longer look at the finished project, thanks to a just-released, full-length trailer.

The movie in question is The Surfer, an upcoming psychological thriller from director Lorcan Finnegan. Filmed on location in Yallingup, Western Australia, the movie stars Cage as a surfer who leaves the United States to return to his Australian hometown. Soon after, he is humiliated in front of his teenage son by a gang of surfers and decides to wage war against them.

Today, co-distributor Roadside Attractions released a new trailer for the film to its YouTube channel. While we did see a teaser last year, this full-length trailer gives a better sense of what the movie is actually about. It certainly seems like it’s going to be a wild ride. The Surfer is slated for a theatrical release in May.
