Portugal, as you’re likely aware by now, is full of amazing waves. Nazaré, Coxos, etcetera, all places that’ll do more than pique your interest. But there is one wave that you might not have heard of, and it’s called Mar da Calha. Nic von Rupp always has one eye on the forecast, and he knows the coastline well enough to understand what kind of swells will do what to which wave. And recently, everything lined up for Mar da Calha to turn on. It’s a river-mouth point break that, by all measures, is crazy good — but only once in a blue moon.
“Mar da Calha is a rarely-surfed mysto spot breaking at the mouth of the mighty Tagus River,” Nic explained. “It’s only when perfectly groomed sandbars combine with clean swell lines that Mar da Calha comes alive and does its magic.”
Nic, along with Ivo Santos and European bodyboarding champ Hugo Pinheiro headed to the mouth of the Tagus and they were well-rewarded for their efforts.
