Nic Von Rupp is known for his dogged pursuit of big waves. From Nazare to Maverick’s, he’s carved out a reputation as one of the world’s surfers when it’s 20-foot plus.
However, after a disappointing (for him) second place finish at the Nazare Big Wave challenge, Rupp decided to get back to his roots – hunting barrels. Initially, he seemed to be mostly exploring his home turf of Portugal, from an unnamed slab from his youth, to picture-perfect Coxos. Since then, it seems that his journey has taken him farther afield.
The latest Von Rupp sighting comes from the Kandui Resort in the Mentawai Islands, as seen in an edit posted to YouTube channel Off Da Lip. There, Rupp and a few other lucky chargers took on some massive, heavy barrels over mere inches of reef.
It seems like even when he decides to take a break, Nic Von Rupp just can’t ignore the siren song of horrifyingly heavy surf.
