Recently, Nic Von Rupp took a trip down memory lane – back to the COVID lockdown. It’s an era many of us aren’t exactly eager to revisit, but for Nic it meant a Mentawai boat trip to surf a bunch of virtually empty lineups. His first video in the series documented an enviable trip to Macaronis, and Von Rupp’s most recent post picks up the day right after – with a trip to Greenbush.
The edit starts off with the crew having to make a tough call. The plan from the beginning had been to surf Greenbush, but suboptimal wind conditions led them to another spot instead. However, arriving to find perfectly glassy conditions led Von Rupp and company to believe that maybe Greenbush was the right call after all. After some back and forth, so they decided to turn around and hightail it to their original destination.
“If you want to score, you gotta roll the dice,” explained Von Rupp. “ Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. We got the shortest stick this morning, [but] hopefully we’ll get some waves.”
It turned out that they made the right call. They arrived to find picturesque, pitching barrels that Von Rupp later described as “the best waves of my life.”
