The Inertia

If you follow surfing, which you do if you’re reading this, you’re likely aware of what has been happening at Nazaré in recent days. In short, it’s been huge. And as usual, Nic von Rupp was there.

“This past week was nothing short of historic — some of the biggest waves ever seen at Nazaré,” wrote António Oliveira, “and Nic might have just ridden the biggest wave of his life. Possibly even a new world record.”

It’s been a long, enormous run of swell. Bigger than anything in recent years, but as is the case at Nazaré, those huge swells often come with high winds.

“Nazaré just saw one of the biggest and longest swell runs in recent history — massive nine-meter waves,” the von Rupp YouTube description reads, “13-second periods, and brutal 36-knot winds. It was a test of commitment, skill, and sheer will.”
