Nic von Rupp went to war with Frederico Morais in his latest YouTube video. To be fair, it was a very friendly war, fought in uncharacteristically approachable surf, but a war nonetheless.
The edit starts off with von Rupp driving north from his home in Lisbon, wryly describing waking up at four in the morning in order to start the journey to a far-flung break. As a famed big wave hunter and Nazaré regular, one would naturally think that only a thundering monster could have stirred him out of bed, but it turns out all the effort was for a shoulder-high wave.
“I didn’t know at 34, that I’d ever be chasing down three-foot, perfect point breaks, but here we are,” Nic joked to camera, shortly before introducing his traveling partner, Frederico Morais. The expedition was the continuation of a friendly rivalry that began in Uluwatu, and would now continue over three sessions at the aforementioned Portuguese mystery break. It was a refreshing change of pace for von Rupp, especially after a gnarly recent injury in which he took a fin to the backside. As he described in the caption, “Not our usual stuff, but it was all about having fun and bringing back those grom-day vibes.”
