On the southern coast of Nias lies Lagundri Bay. That bay plays host to one of the best waves on the planet, and the video you see here showcases it at about the best it can get.
“Not much to say, other than this was one of the best days of surfing we’ve ever filmed!” wrote Global Zoo on YouTube. “Long and deep tubes all day, only blemished by a bit of cross-shore wind in the late morning crumbling the waves a touch.”
According to lore, it was first surfed around 1975. Since then, it has become a bucket-list spot for any surfer. Unlike many parts of Indonesia, Lagundri Bay isn’t all that affected when the winds get bad. Coconut plantations and hills serve as a sort of funnel, so it can be offshore all year around. It can get pretty huge, though, and when it does it is not a wave for the faint of heart.
It’s a quick paddle out to the Point, and the wave and take off is relatively predictable. Once you’re on the wave, of course, you stand a good chance of getting one of the best waves of your life. That, however, is something that everyone wants, so don’t expect to be the only one in the lineup… but just one wave will make the trip and the crowds worthwhile.
