Remember that time the boat went over the falls at Nias? Oh, you do. You won’t forget it anymore than you’ll forget the time that other boat took a highline at the J-Bay Open. Well, the man who owns the boat, Timotius Wau, has taken to social media to explain a few things. Timmy owns the Nias KeyHole surf camp and the Ono Niha Surf Charter, so he ain’t no slouch when it comes to navigating the area.
“What you see is that boat goes over the wave and gets smashed,” Timmy says from inside the cabin of the vessel. “I’m the owner of this boat, and I will say that I apologize [to] all the surfers in the lineup that time. I’m very glad no one got hurt in the water. If someone gets hurt with this boat, it’s going to be very bad.”
According to Timmy, at the time of the accident, he was out of cell service at the Banyak Islands with his surf charter, Ono Nias. When he got service again, he had a message from his wife. “My wife called me and she told me ‘the boat got smashed by the swell in front of our house!'” he explained.
Timmy does have some good friends, though. He goes on to say that a few of them were in the lineup that day, and they did everything they could to save the boat. But, like he says, “it doesn’t work at all, because the set’s coming.”
While it did make for some extraordinary viewing, we’re all breathing a sigh of relief that the only thing hurt was the boat.
