There was plenty of anticipation for the West Coast’s first official solid south swell of the season and that typically means a lot of attention turns toward Newport Beach. La Bomba, as it was called, didn’t light up the entire coast the way some had hoped but it definitely didn’t disappoint at the Wedge. While this wasn’t the biggest surf I’ve ever seen the Wedge, it may have produced some of the heaviest waves I’ve seen there.
I filmed at the Wedge starting Friday (April 23) all the way through Sunday (April 25). I saw wipeouts. I saw carnage. I saw people fly out of barrels victoriously and I saw plenty of doors shut down on others who had no chance. The Wedge’s trademark side wave was working throughout the swell, making for an entertaining show the entire weekend.
