The Inertia

To be honest, it’s kind of ironic that arguably the best run of swell to hit New Jersey this winter was overshadowed by another swell on the other side of the world. Not that anybody within driving distance of the Garden State should have any complaints about it. The local guys like Sam Hammer, Pat Schmidt, and plenty more got their dose of heaving cold-water tubes before the arrival of spring and then probably came home to watch the Gold Coast highlights. Win, win for everybody, right?

The irony I’m speaking of is that the rest of Jersey’s winter has been pretty slow. And cold. Well, cold is a given this time of year, but there are typically some reliable windows with a good swell popping up here, a solid few days popping up there. And all the chatter last week once waves started showing up was that, well, this winter had been a bit of a letdown until this point.

Even after things started to slow down throughout the week though, there were no letdowns to be had. North Carolina tube-hound Owen Moss made the commute up the Atlantic coast and scored alongside Hammer, Kyle Tester, Ben Doughty, and more. Moss says he put in seven-plus hours in his five-mil hoodie, boots, and gloves.

Worth. Every. Minute.
