East swells aren’t ideal for the North Shore. Nathan Florence doesn’t care about “ideal” though — he just cares about surfing. “It’s irresistible,” he said. “We have to go out. If there’s a wave we can nosedive on or scorpion, we have to get out there and try it out.” Nathan Florence surfs Backdoor on the best of days, but he also surfs it on the worst of days.
On this particular day, a day where almost no one was out, a surprising sandbar formed at the world-famous Backdoor. And since Nathan Florence knows that stretch of sand like the back of his hand, he was able to make magic happen.
