Nathan Florence continues his exploration of West Oz, this time uploading footage from The Box. The infamous shallow Australian reef delivers some impressive rides in spitting barrels, in exchange for all three of Joao Chianca’s fins.
Partway through a pretty epic session, Nate is greeted by Joao Chianca. Chianca is the younger brother of Lucas ‘Chumbo’ Chianca, the big-wave surfer and Nazare regular. Oh, and Joao is currently ranked number three in the world on the CT. Turns out that ‘Chumbinho’ has a similar lack of fear, as he gleefully shows off a finless board. “Joao just knocked all his fins out and had a two-wave hold-down,” Florence tells the camera after Joao calls it a day and paddles in, “Not good.”
According to Florence, despite what appeared to be a catastrophic wipeout, Joao emerged laughing. Some would say that meets the definition of insanity, but sometimes you need just the right amount of crazy to tackle the slabby waves and shallow reefs lurking in Western Australia.
