The Inertia

The surfing community is beset by enemies on all sides: whether it’s sharks, weather, rocks, dolphins, or other surfers, the list is long. However, none among these foes is more wantonly destructive than the commercial airline. Nathan Florence recently ran afoul of the board-destroying, Kafkaesque nightmare that is United Airlines while on the way to J-Bay in South Africa.

The interesting upshot is that it allowed Nathan to try out something new for a change. For a surfer who has basically everything, it’s funny to hear him describe the paralysis of choice upon stepping into an actual brick and mortar surf shop. He turned to the help of an employee and emerged with a Slater Designs Houdini.

“Pyzel’s not gonna be happy with all this board testing, but United stole my surfboard and my bag of boards. What’s a guy to do?” says Florence. The board makes the rounds amongst the crew, with the final board test taking the form of the Florence brothers standing on their balcony and giggling as they film Zoard whiff it in the self-described worst session of his life.
