The Inertia

If you’re very lucky and very good at surfing, you have stepped off a Jet Ski into a cavernous tube. Unfortunately, most surfers are either only one of those two things. Or neither, in some cases. Nathan Florence is both. Luck comes from hard work, though, and he works hard to put himself in positions like the ones in the video above. It’s 15 minutes of Nathan surfing said cavernous tubes.

Nate, along with the usual crew, put a few skis in the water, grabbed their surfboards, and used them to stuff themselves inside big beach break tubes. Just last week, they did the same thing, only without the PWCs. The most exciting part about stepping off into a wave that’s going to turn into a very big barrel is that you might not know, exactly, what the wave’s going to do. Oh, you hope it’ll give you an exit, but you’re stepping off so early it can be hard to tell. That means that the light at the end of the tunnel may very well be snuffed out with you inside — which happens a lot in this session. But you can bet that it was all worth it.
