There’s little doubt these days that Nathan Florence is one of the most entertaining surfers to watch online. He charges everything, be it bus-sized tube or tiny beachbreak. He does it all in good fun too, which makes him that much more appealing to regular surfers. While working on airs, he’ll joke about himself and his own abilities, as an example. He’s just a good bloke if you’ve ever met him. But there is no debating his ability in waves of consequence. Unfortunately, his hard-charging ways are catching up to him just a tad. For the second time this year, Nathan is nursing a serious injury after he was hurt in Indonesia yesterday.
”So I got a bit wounded! Board speared my elbow doing a turn, lol imagine that turns are more dangerous than the slab tour,” he wrote on Instagram. “The trip was just getting started at @secretsumatra. Unfortunately, had to end early as infection set in and cut had had some fiberglass in it. I flew home to find out board had speared into bone fracturing it, they removed a little chip and did some cleaning, got a few weeks of recovery ahead. Nothing to wild, thanks @deanfergus for all the help and for having us at @secretsumatra. We can’t wait to come back and surf it on the pump. The set up was awesome! Time to take advantage of some rest. Hawaii to Africa to Indo and back around the world in three weeks was wild, haha, and just one of this year’s adventures with more to come! Thanks to my ortho/ER friends at Kaiser for the clean up!”
Blood squirting out of his elbow is quite the sight. Yikes! You might recall that Nathan suffered a lumbar compression fracture in his back after a terrible wipeout at Jaws. That was a serious wreck as he free fell on a sizable wave and then was chundered about in the impact zone. That injury didn’t require surgery. Mr Florence’s wicked “Slab Tour” has been incredible for capturing footage. But he’s paid the price with his body.
