The Inertia

With the Hawaiian winter over, the Florences are once again free to roam. That means Nathan Florence has resumed his globetrotting “Slab Tour,” in which he hunts down the most borderline-surfable monstrosities he can lay eyes on. The latest stop on the tour (and first of 2025) took him down to South America to visit a fearsome wave he calls “The Thing.”

As Florence packed for the trip, he detailed the ethos of the mission. “Hopefully we’ll find some slabs, but you never know,” he explained. “We could go to a place that’s a more sure score, but we decided this year we want to do some more exploring for new waves – ideally new waves completely, but just waves we haven’t surfed before.”

With that mission laid out for them, Florence and his retinue flew down to Chile, where he and his brother Ivan found a wave that had already been discovered by local bodyboarders and tow surfers, but reportedly never been paddled into before. Then they set out to change that.
