What better way to celebrate the start of big wave season than with a video of Nathan Florence tackling some upsettingly heavy surf? Hot on the heels of his expedition to the slabs of Scotland, Florence has made his way down to the shores of Portugal.
“Gonna surf The Cave today,” said Florence at the top of his latest YouTube video. “Trying to get on it a little early, because the wave needs a bit of tide. The dead low is super dangerous [because] the whole reef shell comes out. The wave is dangerous at any tide, but especially on the dead low.”
True to form, The Cave was, in fact, insanely dangerous. The first run at the wave proved to be a bust, even for a veteran slab hunter like Nathan. “Didn’t catch any waves earlier because it’s too low tide, too sketchy alone,” said Florence. He knows better than most, too, as last year he revealed that The Cave was the only place where his brother John John had been knocked fully unconscious.
Despite all that, Nathan somehow remained undeterred. He quickly geared up for a round two, this time with backup. With a higher tide and some friends in the water, Nathan finally scored. The footage speaks for itself.
