The Inertia

It’s pretty rare to actually find a new break. Between decades of surfers traveling the globe and the advent of easily accessible satellite maps, we know about almost every place there’s a readily accessible wave. What’s left to discover are locations that are difficult to access, heavily dependent on fickle weather conditions, or just plain scary. This week, Nathan Florence seems to have found a combination of all three.

The spot in question appears to be located in northern Scotland, as Nate has been on a trip to the region and posting footage from his journeys along the coast. “After several hours of driving, checking what I thought would would be potential surfable spots, I came upon a shallow reef set up far in the distance I thought had potential,” reads the chyron at the top of Nate’s latest video. “I flew my drone for a closer look, what I found was actually insane, shallow heavy and absolutely barreling, but with very little access, big tides and narrow windows of weather. I had to move quick.” Afterwards, Nathan and a bodyboarder went in to test the waters (literally). Though conditions never really coalesced into a perfect ride, and getting back in proved to be more difficult than anticipated, the two emerged from the water wide-eyed at its potential.

Now we’re left with a few burning questions. The first is whether it’s truly a new spot, or just new to Nathan. The second is if it is a new break, what are we going to name it?
