The Inertia

Nate Florence has a real love affair with extraordinarily dangerous waves. Pipeline, of course, but waves like Teahupoo and Shipstern Bluff, too. They’re not waves for the everyday surfer. They’re waves for only a handful of the surfing population, and Nate certainly is in that small percentage.

Recently, a swell popped up on the horizon. It was bound for Shipsterns, so Nathan got his Covid test, scrambled to put his gear in order, and hopped on a plane into the wild blue yonder, pointed towards Tasmania. In tow was Ryan Moss, who agreed to the trip with two-hours notice.

Shippies is a hard wave to predict, but Nathan talked to a few people who’re dialed in. They knew one thing for certain: it was going to be very, very big. And very, very big it certainly was.
