The Inertia

Nate Florence isn’t usually a guy who’ll pump out highlight reels. He takes a different tack, at least for the most part.

“You guys know how we do it here on the YouTube,” he said. “Just per swell, per trip videos; behind the scenes, all that stuff.”

But in his most recent offering, he decided that the viewers might actually like to see one, so he and the crew sorted through what must be a vast amount of footage from the last two years to make a highlight reel that’s pretty tough to beat.

“We thought it’d be cool,” he continued. “We wanted to thank you guys for watching and supporting over the last couple of years.”

For someone like Nate, though, making a highlight reel can’t be an easy task. That old saying “kill your darlings” almost certainly comes into play, because on every trip, there’s a camera pointed at him for the majority of the time.

“It could have been an hour,” he said. “But we just put a little four-minute part together. We used it in Hawaii for a little premiere we did, but more just wanted to release it to YouTube as appreciation to all my subscribers and YouTube and everyone who’s enjoyed the journey with us.”

That journey is one that’s taken him all over the globe in search of waves. Big waves. Slabby waves. Shallow waves, and everything in between. Pipe is in there, of course, but also a bunch of other places he found amazing waves while on his never-ending hunt.
