Nathan Florence has a preference when it comes to the kinds of waves he likes to surf. They’re scary ones. Big ones. Heavy as they come. Shallow, slabby, and powerful. Waves that could break your back. Waves like the ones that break at Shipstern Bluff, Tasmania.
When Shipstern goes off properly, it’s a tow wave. Those paddle days are incredible to watch, but at a certain size, it’s not exactly possible to get the deepest possible tube without the help of a PWC. But as you’ll see in the video above, when those waves hit that certain size, getting the beatdown of your life is pretty much impossible to avoid.
