On Good Friday, I was getting ready to go down the coast. The conditions were perfect and I had to choose between my local beach, Cronulla, or down the South Coast.
I got up at the crack of dawn after hearing on the radio there was a massive swell coming from New Zealand to Australia. It was said that there were going to be west winds all day, which meant offshore swell.
Down south, I arrived to pumping waves everywhere along the coast line. Traffic was a pain, and I had never shot this wave before. I was eager to shoot!
On the way down, we stopped at the Bommie on the way to our caravan down in Gerringong. I ended up shooting the Bommie for a couple of hours. It’s amazing what a wave can do breaking onto a shallow reef. It’s really unpredictable and I couldn’t describe the awe and excitement I felt. It was one of those “you have to see it to believe it” situations. The Bommie was getting all the swell and it was about 12-15 foot with no one out, which really surprised me as I thought someone would at least be out in an attempt to tame this beast. Alas, no takers.
