The Inertia

During the last weekend of October, Mundaka lit up. It’s always a good wave when it’s working, but when it’s really working? It’s mind-boggingly good. Just the right time, then, for a contest.

On October 28-29, the Mundaka Surf Club held its annual local championship, and the waves certainly showed up. The wind howled offshore from the south and 6-8 foot reeling tubes rolled through.

Mundaka is a place that should be on every surfer’s bucket list, especially for the goofies. A south wind there is a pretty regular occurrence, and with the right direction of swell, surfers can get leg-burning rides. It’s probably Spain’s most famous wave, and certainly one of the most famous waves in Europe; a perfect river mouth setup sitting on the edge of a picturesque little Basque Country fishing town.

It’s not exactly a wave that breaks with any real frequency — it’s pretty fickle, in fact — but when it does, it’s worth the wait. Generally autumn is the best time there, but any time a big northwest Atlantic groundswell meets up with a southwest offshore wind, all eyes turn to Mundaka.
