Third reef Pipeline blocked the horizon yesterday. As the swell continued to build, whipping the best surfers in the world into a mix of perfect barrels and perfect annihilation, it became more and more evident that the contest was going to be called off. What were once perfect barrels turned into massive clamp downs. Broken boards washed up on the sand nearly every heat.
But soon after the contest was called off, everything changed. The wind switched, and the barrels opened up again. The crowds swelled as the waves filled in, and one of the best free surf sessions in years proceeded to knock the socks off everyone watching.
