On Tuesday, September 14, Southern California was hit by a huge swell. It was big enough to make the World Surf League’s inaugural Finals Day a huge success, but it was also big enough to turn Newport Beach’s weirdest wave into something we all know and love. The Wedge went absolutely nuts, and while the surfing world’s eyes were on Lower Trestles, a few Wedge locals took the opportunity to stroke into a few monsters of their own.
Brad Jacobson was on the beach, camera in hand. “Oh man,” he wrote. “This swell had some KICK! This was day two of the swell that hit Southern California. I decided to go back to the Wedge for the second day straight when I heard reports that it would be bigger than Monday and they were right.”
Jacobson captured Tommy Cantrell, Tanner McDaniel, Koa Smith, Craig Whetter, Jeff Hubbard, Nic Lamb, Tyler Thornsley, Tyler Newton, and many others, and one thing remains clear: when the Wedge does its thing, there’s no wave quite like it.
