The Inertia

It’s been one week since American Jack Carter Rhoad and Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson first went missing while on a surf trip to Baja California, Mexico. Since then, Mexican police have made several arrests in relation to the case, as well as located four bodies at the bottom of a well, three of which they believe belong to the surfers. Today, authorities held a press conference where they explained the working theory as to what happened, as ABC News reports.

According to the Baja California Forensic Medical Service, all three of the bodies presumed to belong to the missing foreigners died from gunshot wounds to the head (The fourth body is believed to be unrelated, as it had “been there for a long time.”). Baja California attorney-general María Elena Andrade Ramírez explained the early theory is that attackers attempted to steal the trio’s white Chevy truck for its tires, then shot the surfers when they resisted.

So far, three people have been arrested in relation to the murders, including one woman who was found with either Callum or Jake’s phone. However, investigators believe more were involved. “In fact, we are sure that more people took part in the attack,” said Andrade Ramírez.

Though it seems all but certain that we have discovered the final fate of Jack, Jake and Callum, the identities of the bodies have yet to be officially confirmed. Andrade Ramírez stated earlier this week that “All three bodies meet the characteristics to assume with a high degree of probability that they are the American [Jack] Carter Rhoad as well as the Robinson brothers from Australia.”

Family members of the missing men have arrived in Tijuana to identify the bodies, and authorities expect to have official confirmation soon.
