“Style” is a big deal in surfing. It’s a strange thing though — impossible to describe, really, but very obvious to everyone who sees it. Mikey February has it. Lots of it. He has it no matter what board he’s riding, but it’s particularly evident when he’s riding a 6’10” CI Mid with a 2+1 setup.
Midlengths have enjoyed a recent resurgence in popularity, largely in part to two things: average surfers realized just how much fun they can have on them and not-so-average surfers showing them just how much fun THEY can have on them. The CI Mid is inspired by the clean, longer-railed versions that Al Merrick used to make back in the ’70s. Those traditional eggs and single fins. The one you see in the video above, however, has a bunch of modern design built into it. With the help of Devon Howard, the CI team squashed together the timeless concept with a few tricks of the trade that make it more sensitive, responsive, and frankly, more fun.
“Boasting a sleek, egg-like template with low entry rocker and foam a tad forward for ease of paddle and effortless trim speed,” the CI team explains, “the CI Mid scoots, squirts and swivels thanks to contemporary features like double-barrel concave, gradually accelerated rocker, and hard, slightly tucked rails through and off the tail.”
And while it likely won’t make you surf like M. Feb, it’ll likely make you enjoy surfing even more than you already do.
