The Inertia

Style in surfing is a tough thing to nail down. When someone’s got style, it’s obvious, but defining it is nearly impossible. Whatever it is, though, Mikey February definitely has it. And when the surf craft of choice is a little longer than a standard shortboard, the stylishness becomes a little more obvious.

In the video above, MFeb is riding a 7’1″ tri-plane hull with a single fin. The board, which was created to be a user-friendly midlength, incorporates a bottom design Al Merrick first built in the 1970s. It’s a George Greenough-inspired planing hull that jams a pile of lift into a surfboard.

“Working with surfer Devon Howard once again (see CI Mid), we set out to build a better egg-style, single-fin — a genre of surfboard that can often look cool and groovy but tend to ride slow and sticky, sometimes lacking pizazz or drive through the turns,” wrote the folks at CI Surfboards. “By incorporating a tri-plane hull bottom with Al’s classic egg outline, and combined with our modern style rail and rocker profiles, we landed on a rather spicy midlength design that has a surprising amount of trim speed and drive through its turn in small surf — making this a reliable long-railed performer in conditions ranging from subpar to above average.”

Of course, a board like this won’t make you surf like Mikey February, but it sure is a pleasure to see what’s possible, isn’t it?
