The Inertia

You’ve seen Aussies getting barreled out of their minds ahead of Cyclone Alfred’s east coast arrival. There have been highlights on top of highlights flooding the internet the past day-plus while the rest of the region has braced itself as the Category 2 storm closed in on the coast. Among them was three-time world champ Mick Fanning getting one the best waves of the entire run.

Fanning got all the chee hoos he could have asked for, no doubt. Turns out he also walked away with a couple of stitches.

“Couple of stitches to go with a couple tubes. Good to go again,” he said.

It’s not the most gruesome thing you’ve ever seen but taking one to the head so close to any eye could have been disastrous.

Meanwhile, Alfred is expected to make landfall somewhere between the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast early Friday bringing a lot of rain, potential flooding, and destructive winds. The storm has already forced a closure of the Gold Coast airport ahead of its arrival and the public is being urged to stay home.

“This looks like the most significant event in our city in terms of destructive winds and heavy rain that we’ve seen since 1954,” announced Gold Coast acting Mayor Donna Gates. “Let me reiterate that this is going to be a very widespread event, and the modeling shows for the canal estates, just as it does for anyone on a dry residential block.”
