Mick Fanning with surfboard fins

The Inertia

When you’re as dialed in on a surfboard as Mick Fanning is, small things make a big difference. Now, I’m a pretty firm believer that, for the Average Joe, fins don’t matter all that much. Sure, you might notice a bit more flex or a tad more rake, but unless your career depends on fractions of points… meh. Ride it long enough, and you’ll get used to even the shittiest of fins. You’ll still have fun. It is funny, though, how such a small thing can have such a drastic difference on the overall feel of a surfboard.

BUT. And that’s an all caps but for a reason. BUT, if a small change in flex or rake makes you have more fun, then by all means, go for it. Mick Fanning, though, is not an Average Joe, so he’s pretty well-versed in fins.

In the video you see here, which is part of FCS Surf’s Beneath The Surface, Fanning dives into an in-depth conversation about his “personal fin journey.” Like many other pros who hang up the jersey, Fanning has been playing around with different set ups, most notably twins. Turns out, he loves them.
