Michael February just released his final edit from Morocco. The video, appropriately named MOROCCO (SIDE 3), concludes a three-part series directed by Ian Thurtell.
Thurtell is a surf photographer hailing from Cape Town, South Africa. Over the past decade, he’s built a reputation for himself for both the beautiful images he produces and innovative approach to capturing them. As he explained in a 2020 interview, he actually builds his own underwater housings, an approach that arose from necessity.
“I bought my first film SLR and I was like ‘No way I can buy the housing for this thing,’” he explained. ”So my dad helped me, and we made this pretty chunky fiberglass housing for it. It was probably a centimeter thick, overcautious and all that. I think it even had two o-rings, back then. [But we] slapped it in and it worked. I made my own pistol grip and I haven’t changed that formula since. I still make my own underwater housings to this day.”
Part one of MOROCCO released two weeks ago and can be found here. Part two came out last Tuesday and can be found here. The films were produced by February’s company, Spearhead Unlimited.
