The Lane in Santa Cruz is an arena of surfing with generations passing through its waves. With the recent passing of Shawn “Barney” Barron we are reminded how short life can be. Time has no set date that ends it keeps on going with or without us.
On a recent visit to The Lane I was reminded of this when I asked a local surfer about the person I had just snapped busting a backside air. He said Ben Coffey. The name Coffey rang a bell. Was he the son of Ward Coffey?
It made me think of the next generation of Santa Cruz surfing. They’re taking over and filling in as we leave, pass on, or maybe because were getting old. The future’s looking bright on WestCliff Drive.
