The Inertia

Author Malcolm Gladwell submits that 10,000 hours of “deliberate practice” are required to become world-class in any field. For Matahi Drollet, an undisputed specialist at Teahupoo, that would mean that he’s spent about 15 percent of his life in the tube. At just 17-years-old, the Teahupoo local is already pushing the boundaries of big wave surfing as a XXL Award winner, a show-stealer during the filming of Point Break 2, and a leading force in Hurley’s army of mutant midget surf prodigies.

In a new series presented by Hurley, the world’s greatest groms are profiled as they embark upon world dominance. Matahi kicks off the series with a bang – the clip is comprised of only clips from his homespot Chopes and he absolutely kills it. It’s crazy to think what this kid will be doing in a few years. And he doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

“Surfing means everything for me,” Matahi says. “I don’t know what I would do in life if surfing wasn’t there for me.”
