This season has been a particularly wild one for Maverick’s surfers. It’s been huge more times than usual, and by now the usual suspects must be wondering when they’ll have a chance to rest. Because Maverick’s surfers will not pass up a chance to surf it when it’s big. And on February 1, it got big. Again.
“Any time anyone has asked me how the surf is going to be this year, I have one answer,” says Luca Padua. “It’s rugged. Rugged will be the theme of the season.”
As I said, it’s been a wild few months at California’s most famous big wave spot. A day that stands out particularly was December 28th. Pete Mel, as one would expect, has proven more than once that he’s still one of the best out there.
The season is far from over, and it’s likely that there are least a handful of XXL swells on the horizon. It’s a tough place to surf, though, not just because of the size and weight of the wave itself, but because of the cold, the crowd, and the general demeanor of the ocean when it produces a swell big enough to turn Maverick’s into the beast it can be.
Powerlines Productions was there, as they normally are, to document the madness.
