In 2008, Matthew McConaughey starred in an absolutely terrible film called Surfer, Dude. It flopped at the box office, flopped in people’s living rooms, and was awarded a rare 0 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Matthew McConaughey is not to blame, really, because he’s a fantastic actor who’s proven his coolness and talent time and time again, but it was an odd role for him to take.
He might come off as sort of surfer-ish — at least what the wider public’s perception of what a surfer is — but Surfer, Dude was not a movie for surfers. Or for anyone else, for that matter. It would only be slightly enjoyable if you were to watch it with your eyes closed and the television turned off, and even in the dark silence you might suspect that you were being exposed to something horrible.
But you know what wasn’t an awful movie that was also tangentially related to surfing? The Beach Bum. McConaughey was joined by Snoop Dogg, Jimmy Buffet, and Jonah Hill in a hilarious yet poignant stoner movie about a sad, drug-addled writer who is equal parts Jimmy Buffett and Hunter S. Thompson. It’s funny and sad and didn’t get nearly the respect that it deserved, and if you haven’t seen it, you must see it. Do it tonight. Keep the television on and your eyes open.
Anyway, sorry about the word vomit. Onto the clip you came here to see. Matthew McConaughey recently went surfing at the Surf Ranch. As is generally the case, Raimana Van Bastolaer was there, aggressively screaming encouragement at him in a way that only Raimana can scream. McConaughey is by no means a pro surfer, but it’s safe to say that his surfing is a hell of a lot better than Surfer, Dude was. And if he had fun doing it, then that’s good enough, because surfing is super fun and people having fun is awesome.
