Matt Parker of Album Surfboards makes a lot of very interesting boards. He’s made a name for himself in recent years with his asymmetrical shapes. But as with many great things, one of them was born out of an accident.
“I had a model called the Dischord, which was like our high-performance shortboard,” Parker explained. “I was shaping a Dischord and I flipped it over on the racks in the shaping room and when I flipped it over, there must have been some weird little bubble in the blank because the nose just basically popped off. It just snapped off. I was like, ‘I gotta do something with it.'”
The Dischord — now known as the Disorder — is an amazing looking surfboard. Asymmetricals aren’t for everyone, but the people who love them really love them. And when Parker began shaving off the little bits and pieces of the Dischord, he created something that asymm lovers LOVE.
“We always call it the Ferrari,” Parker continued. “It’s the better version of the high-performance shortboard… symmetry is a little bit overrated generally, I think, in high-performance surfboards.”
