Matt Archbold is a full-on legend. Decades ago, back in the mid-eighties, Archbold turned the surfing world on its head with his aerial antics. He, along with Christian Fletcher, laid the first bricks on the road to what surfing looks like today. After a few years on tour that were filled with a lot of partying, he decided to go his own way. It could be argued that he was the first real “free surfer” in a time when free surfers didn’t exist.
Now, all these years later, he’s part of a small group of people that the surf world reveres. So when Jamie O’Brien had a chance to hang with “one of [his] idols”, he jumped at the chance. O’Brien pulled a dusty old nineties stick from the garage and Archbold brought a Patterson from the eighties, and they paddled out. And Archbold hasn’t skipped a beat.
