The latest video from ripper royalty Mason Ho starts with him standing on a cliff overlooking Uluwautu, with famed shaper John Pyzel next to him. Pyzel looks over and notices the board under Mason’s arm, a Mayhem Driver 3.0.
“That looks like a regular, normal shortboard there,” said Pyzel, taking it under his arm. He’s right, it’s not a sized-down, volumed-up contemporary groveler, a playfully designed channel-bottom twinnie, or a retro-nodding fish. It’s just a solid shortboard, designed for peak performance on good waves.
That’s what the video’s all about: no-nonsense, capable surfing at one of the most enviable breaks in the world. The novelty waves and hidden breaks are good and all, but sometimes you just want to see someone surf a wave with all cylinders firing.
“The BEST clip from this session is actually being saved for SNAPT5 The Final Cut,” says the description on the video, so luckily there’s more to look forward to.
