The Inertia

When winter rolls around on the North Shore, it’s a time of great excitement. For the surfers who grew up on the Seven Mile Miracle — and many others who simply love the place — it’s the time of year they’ve been waiting for. Mason Ho is one of them, so when those powerful winter swells reared their heads, Mason was pretty damn ready.

He’d been in France for a while, feasting on French food and French waves, but when he returned to Hawaii and the waves were pumping, it was likely a no-place-like-home situation. In the video above, which was shot over a week in October, Mason, Coco, and Sheldon Paishon bounce around those seven miles of reefs, surfing the Rock Garden, Rocky Point, Sunset Beach, and of course Pipeline.

There aren’t too many guys who surf Pipe quite as well as Mason. He’s a mix of old-school style and new-school progression, but he’s got something a little extra thrown in the mix. A certain je ne sais quoi that’s got something to do with the fact that it’s really, really obvious just how much fun Mason has when the waves are well and truly going off. Which makes sense, because Mason’s skill level is so high that he’s able to make waves that would the best of most surfer’s lives look like everyday occurrences… which, for Mason, is kind of true.
